Announcing Our Investment in Octane

Ash Egan

For every $10 invested in crypto, $1 gets hacked.

The incentive for malicious attacks only continues to increase as the industry and its total market cap grow. With hacks rapidly becoming more sophisticated, and social engineering already a large enough attack surface, we cannot afford for code itself to be an Achilles heel.

Security audits and static analysis tools have their place, but we need something more dynamic if we’re going to stay ahead of the growing realm of threats. Octane believes AI has unlocked this much needed step function improvement in uncovering and remediating smart contract vulnerabilities.

Octane is building an AI-powered developer tool that makes codebases more secure by analyzing every pull request. Through a one-click installable GitHub integration, their models continuously analyze source code throughout the software development lifecycle. Octane is implementing AI at its core across code repositories, both private and public, and is already yielding critical improvements to vulnerable code that hackers have historically arbitraged with ease. As Octane continues to see wider implementation, its ability to find and create solutions to complex vulnerabilities grows exponentially. Octane currently offers a Github CI/CD integration for AI analysis of Solidity code and has already helped Circle, Alchemy, 0g.ai, CAMP, Decent, and others discover vulnerabilities that audits alone missed.

Octane was founded by Giovanni Vignone, a Duke alumni who served as President of the school’s Blockchain Lab. Gio is the newest addition to a line of elite Duke CS alumni, following the likes of Fred Ehrsam, Zach Abrams, and Brandon Millman. With a team that includes former leaders at Palantir, Waymo, Apple, Trail of Bits, and Spearbit, Octane is laser focused on empowering developers to build more secure software, faster.

We’re incredibly excited to lead Octane’s $6.75M Seed round alongside Winklevoss Capital as Gio and the Octane team make that $1 hacked per $10 invested a metric of the past.
